A profoundly sad story of a Belgian national who was let down, by so many. I don’t doubt the anguish, that is evident in reading through the events. The Belgian qualification of “unbearable psychological suffering” was deemed to have been met, and at his request his life was recently ended by doctors.
It does however highlight the VERY broad guidelines in Tasmania’s proposed Euthanasia laws. The Tasmanian legislative definition is currenlty suffering from a “progressive medical condition” causing persistent suffering that is “intolerable for the person”.
It is difficult to see how this is not a description of “life, in the tough bits”, at least for some of us, some of the time.
“unbearable psychological suffering” is a wide net.
